Interesting facts: James Dean was born on February 8, 1931 and died on September 30, 1955. His death was a shock and tragedy to the American public. It came about before a race he planned to take place in on a highway. Cal Poly, a 23 year old, hit Dean in a head on collision on the highway. Dean was killed and Poly received some injuries. Yet, Dean’s popularity is equally as interesting. James Dean was an icon and well loved actor yet he only starred in three Hollywood movies. His most famous performance was in “Rebel Without A Cause” in which he portrayed a misfit high school student that everyone could relate to. His other two films were “East of Eden” and “Giant”. He was also the first person to receive a posthumous Academy Award.


Historical analysis: James Dean’s overall appearance and lifestyle accurately sum up some of the characteristics of the 1950’s. This period was a time of fun, happiness, and living life. Dean managed to do all those things, but ultimately they would be his demise. Also his intense love for cars, especially modified, powerful cars is equal to the love of many from the 1950’s.
